Donations

Bone and tissue donation is sourced two ways. First, live donation which is commonly done during everyday procedures like a hip replacement, upon the official voluntary consent of the patient. Second is deceased donation.

Types of donations:

Femoral/ Living Donations

Known as the Hip or Femoral Donation Program, this allows patients to voluntarily donate their femoral head during a hip replacement surgery. Typically discarded during the routine surgery, the femoral head is an extremely valuable asset when it comes to the crafting of allografts.

Cadaveric/Deceased
Donations

It’s not an easy topic of discussion, however with only 2% of Australians passing in the specific circumstances that make organ donation necessary, it’s an important conversation to be had.

Are you on the Donor Register? Have you sat down with your loved ones or next of kin to discuss organ, bone and tissue donation? It is very common for most people to know very little about tissue donation, so it is important that we begin the conversation sooner rather than later.
